Prof. Mohamed Yakub Janabi

Prof. Mohamed Yakub Janabi, Regional Director, WHO African Region, since June 2025. A cardiologist by training, he founded the Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute in 2014, significantly reducing the country's need to send cardiac patients abroad for care, before serving as Executive Director of Muhimbili National Hospital, Tanzania's largest referral facility, and later as senior health advisor to the President of Tanzania. In his first year as Regional Director, he has steered WHO's response to the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and the agreement of a 10-year regional health workforce agenda.
